Friends Research Institute (FRI) is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit research organization promoting health and well-being through research, grants administration, education and treatment. For over 50 years, FRI has managed and/or conducted hundreds of biomedical, educational, and psychosocial studies funded by state, federal, industry, and foundation sponsors nationwide.

Epoch Counseling Center is a division of FRI which provides substance abuse prevention and treatment services to adolescents and adults in Baltimore County, Maryland. Epoch serves more than 700 clients each year in four locations and has more than 20 clinicians on staff. For the 36 years of Epoch’s history, we have maintained clients’ accounting records on hand-written billing cards.

In the last several years, Epoch has become more involved with insurance billing as close to half of our clients have insurance which covers at least some of their treatment cost. We have done this work by hand and found that we were spending the majority of our time on billing. Very little time was left for research and resolution of unpaid claims. Another growing concern has been our inability to effectively monitor and manage unpaid balances for our sizeable population of
self-pay clients.

When we began to research electronic billing programs, we found that the setup costs were very high. We have been fortunate enough to acquire enough computer equipment to provide a pc
for each employee, but our computers are not networked. As a result, we would have either needed to set up a server or purchase enough sets of software for each office to have one. It was
beginning to look like we would not be able to implement an accounting system.

In the process of researching products, I found out about Antek. The person I spoke with talked enthusiastically about how easy the DAQbilling program was to learn and in particular about how
wonderful the technical support department was to work with. They referred me to Cathy Hyman who spent quite a bit of time with me over the phone before referring me to Sherri Bantner in
the sales department.

I was immediately impressed with the friendliness of the Antek personnel and their responsiveness to my questions – which were many! Over the next month, we planned for a 3 day training to include all 32 of our employees. As I write this, we have just completed the training and are in the process of downloading the program and beginning to enter client data. While many of our employees were apprehensive about the conversion, they were very enthusiastic after the training and have already begun to set up their schedules and enter data.

We have no doubt that the process of implementing the program will present challenges but we have been very pleased with the early dealings with Antek. We are hopeful that the DAQbilling program will allow us to continue to improve efficiency and facilitate an expansion of our services.
